COVID-19 Updates for Life in the UK Test and Citizenship Ceremonies

Life in the UK test citizenship ceremony COVID update

Who is required to take the Life in the UK Test?

The Life in the UK Test is a mandatory requirement for most people wanting to apply for naturalisation as a British citizen or permanent residence (Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or settlement).

Which Test Centres are currently open?

The Home Office has allowed the opening of some English language testing facilities and Life in the UK Test Centres.

As these centres do not seem to be posted online, we recommend that you call the Life in the UK Test Hotline to get the specific and accurate information you need:
Telephone: 0800 015 4245
Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm

How can I access UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services?

When you apply for a visa, settlement (‘indefinite leave to remain’), or citizenship in the UK, you may need to use UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS).

For some UK visa and settlement applications, you’ll need to make an appointment at a Service and Support Centre (SSC). For more information, visit the Coronavirus Immigration Help Centre page to see if this pertains to you.

You must follow the centre’s social distancing measures.

Can I attend a citizenship ceremony and become a citizen?

Citizenship applicants over the age of 18 must take a citizenship ceremony. Once the applicant has taken the oath via a citizenship ceremony they become an official British citizen.

On July 20th, Home Office Minister Kevin Foster attended the UK’s first virtual citizenship ceremony. Local authorities are now able to hold citizenship ceremonies for individuals and households virtually. Group citizenship ceremonies have been suspended until further notice.

The time frame to book a citizenship ceremony after receiving an invitation from the Home Office has been extended from 3 months to 6 months.
